If you’re currently going through cancer treatment or recovery, massage can offer comfort, relaxation, and relief but not all massage techniques are safe. Deep tissue massage, in particular, is contraindicated for many cancer patients.
Why Deep Tissue Is Not Recommended:
• Fragile or sensitive tissues during chemotherapy/radiation
• Low platelet or white blood cell counts
• Risk of bruising, inflammation, or skin damage
• Lymphedema risk after lymph node removal
• Bone fragility or metastasis
• Ports, radiation sites, and recent surgical areas needing protection
Safe Massage Benefits for Cancer Patients:
• Eases stress, anxiety, and fatigue• Supports better sleep
• Reduces muscle tension without deep pressure
• Enhances a sense of calm and well-being
General Contraindications for Cancer Patients:
• Active infections or fever
• Unhealed surgical incisions
• Radiation burns or fragile skin
• Blood clots or DVT history
• Severe neuropathy
• Very low blood counts (based on medical guidance)
Your body is going through enough. Massage should support your healing, never stress it.
Your safety is always our priority. When needed, we may ask for your doctor’s clearance.
